In my opinion, although QA testing (especially on a realistic test environment and as you mentioned, with realistic test data) is critical to avoid nasty surprises in production, QA testing should not replace, but supplement developer testing. Developers should still rigorously unit test their own code. This would help reduce the number of bugs in QA testing.
